The Home Affairs Select Committee has visited Miami as part of the Committee’s ongoing inquiry into UK drugs policy.
Keith, as Chairman of the Committee, led the delegation. Keith met with senior military officials at US Southern Command, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Florida Justice Network.
He heard practical discussions about regional narcotics challenges and their impact on the UK, Florida’s domestic policy and the debate around decriminalisation and abuse of prescription drugs.
The delegation also visited Miami air and sea ports, where they observed operational security procedures.
The Committee will also visit Columbia, where they will meet with President Santos and visit projects which have successfully deterred local farmers from growing coca plants. Approximately 55% of the UK cocaine comes from Columbia.
