House Magazine – Q & A on Succession Bill

House Magazine – January 24th 2011 – Keith Vaz Q&A on the introduction of his Succession to the Crown bill.

Why have you decided to introduce this bill?

Gender equality has been the cornerstone of British society for more than 35 years. It seems only fair that this is reflected in Royal Succession rules and with the marriage of Prince William and Catherine Middleton less than 100 days away this is the right time to bring these rules in line with 21st century Britain.

What has the feedback been, and what happens next?

Even before I announced the Bill, several polls had highlighted the considerable public backing. What we now know is that there is also significant Commonwealth interest, as well as cross-party support in the British Parliament. The Bill is now scheduled for second reading on 13th May 2011.
