Keith celebrated his 25th anniversary in Parliament. He was first elected as MP for Leicester East in June 1987.

Aishwarya Rai and her husband, Abhishek Bachchan came to London for the 25th anniversary celebrations and took part in a dinner to support the work of diabetes charity Silver Star.

Jaya Bachchan attended an event in Leicester, also in support of the charity. Mr Vaz was hoping to welcome Mr Bachchan himself but on the advice of his doctor, he was unable to travel. Guests had the opportunity to sign a giant heart-shaped get well card for Mr Bachchan, which was presented to Jaya on the evening and will be delivered by her to Mr Bachchan’s bedside.

The events raised funds for the fourth mobile diabetes unit of the Leicester based charity, to be based in Mumbai. The unit is to be named after Amitabh Bachchan, the charity’s international patron, and handed over to him on the day of his birthday, 11th October 2012 in Bollywood. The charity was founded by Mr Vaz who himself has type 2 diabetes.

Mr Vaz decided that his 25th anniversary would be dedicated to the cause of diabetes which is a growing global epidemic.3.4 million people in the UK suffer from diabetes, and 24,000 people die prematurely each year from related causes. In India, over 61 million people have the condition, which can have devastating consequences. Last year, 983,000 people died from related complications. By 2030, it is estimated that over 100 million Indians will have the disease.
