Today Keith launched a petition calling for a visa centre in Leicester.
He is calling for a dual-purpose facility in Leicester so residents are saved the time, expense and inconvenience of travelling to obtain visas and biometric data. It should be able to issue Indian visas to British citizens and allow foreign nationals living in Leicester to register their biometric data for British residence permits.
The need for biometric capacity is urgent. From March 2012 foreign nationals from outside the European Economic Area will have to have a biometric residence permit. This will include many international students and all new migrants with leave to remain in the UK. Leicester, with its high immigrant population and two large and successful universities attracting students from all over the world, will have a high demand for such permits.
Keith is concerned that those on restricted incomes are unfairly disadvantaged by the distances they have to travel for these documents. The nearest biometric facilities for Leicester residents are currently as far away as Beeston, Nottingham and Derby. The nearest centre for Indian visas is in Birmingham.
