As part of his continuing campaign against added sugar, Keith and a delegation of medical professionals have met with the Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt to enlist him in the war on sugar.
The Secretary of State had agreed to the summit meeting with Keith and his delegation after coming under increasing pressure to address the amount of sugar added to our food and drink by industry.
Earlier this month, Keith asked the Prime Minister at Prime Ministers Questions to join him in the war on sugar by giving up sugar for one day that week. David Cameron said that he would take up this proposal if he possibly could and agreed to arrange a meeting with Mr Hunt.
Present at the meeting was Jane Ellison MP, Public Health Minister with responsibility for diabetes, Professor Graham MacGregor, Dr Aseem Malhotra, Dr Ralph Abraham, Professor Azhar Farooqi, Dr Amrit Lamba, Katharine Jenner, Cherian Thomas & Dhirindar Bhullar.
After the meeting, Keith said:
“I thought the meeting was extremely positive. The Health Secretary was very keen to start a dialogue about how best to tackle the issue of obesity and in particular childhood obesity.
He agreed to look at a number of our ideas including a specific pledge to reduce sugar as part of the Responsibility Deal and more prominent food labelling.
I hope this is the start of a more hands on approach by Government towards tackling the obesity epidemic.”
