Keith Vaz and Minister for Health, Andy Burn MP began the demolition of the old Charnwood Health Centre, preparing the site for new building work to begin on a new state of the art health centre on the 16th January.
The £12.8 million project will be completed in two years time and will provide health services for 50,000 patients.
The centre will include two GP practices, community nursing and dental services, as well as a specialist nursing service for the condition sickle cell anaemia.
Keith Vaz said:
I have been campaigning for 10 years for new facilities. The building was falling down and people really deserve this centre.
“It will also give us a real opportunity to provide further services – I would love to see a diabetes screening service based here – and to help people in the prevention of illness.”
