Riyad Mahrez, Leicester City Football Club striker, was named Sportsman of the Year by the largest ethnic minority newspaper in the United Kingdom, Asian Voice, at a ceremony at the House of Commons on Thursday 10th March 2016.
Asian Voice is the UK’s foremost English language title for ethnic minority communities. With a weekly readership in excess of 20,000, Asian Voice is one of the most respected and influential papers for the UK and Europe.
Previous winners, at what are known as the Peepul Awards, include the Prime Minister, David Cameron, as Parliamentarian of the Year in 2010, and former US Presidential Candidate and Civil Rights Leader, Reverend Jesse Jackson, who was given the Lifetime Achievement Award. As well as Riyad Mahrez, this year’s winners included Sir Trevor McDonald for the Lifetime Achievement Award, amongst many other senior political and public figures.
Mr Mahrez was welcomed to the House of Commons by Member of Parliament for Leicester East, Rt Hon Keith Vaz MP, and received his award from the Speaker of the House of Commons, Rt Hon John Bercow MP, in a ceremony attended by over 200 people on the House of Commons Terrace.
